By Low Key NBA

Abdulwahab Alhamwi is 7’3″, was born in Homs in 1990, and has been Syria’s center at almost every major tournament since he was a teenager. As far as we could find, he has never played outside Asian basketball, yet he is one of the tallest men to have a long international career. This page sets out what his record actually shows, using FIBA’s own numbers.

Who Is Abdulwahab Alhamwi?

Alhamwi comes from Homs, in western Syria. He first appeared on the international stage at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship, where he played five games. Two years later he was in the senior team at the 2011 Asia Championship, averaging 7.3 points and 5.0 rebounds. He was eligible for the 2012 NBA draft and was not selected.

As far as we could find, his professional career has been spent with Syrian clubs. Wikipedia lists him with Al Ittihad of Aleppo and credits him with a Syrian league title in 2022. FIBA’s coverage of the West Asia Super League has him with Al Wahda of Damascus in 2023-24, where he averaged 9.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

His National Team Record

Syria has not had many constants over the last decade and a half. Alhamwi has been one of them.

Event Points Rebounds
2011 Asia Championship 7.3 5.0
2019 World Cup qualifiers (12 games) 9.8 7.8
2022 Asia Cup 11.3 8.3
2025 Asia Cup 5.3 4.3

The peak came in 2022, at age 31 or 32, which is late for a center. In the qualifiers for the 2025 Asia Cup he still had 11 points and 6 rebounds against Lebanon. In the current qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup he has appeared in two games and played very few minutes. Full tournament lines are on his FIBA page.

Scouting Report: Strengths and Weaknesses

What he does well

  • Size. At 7’3″ he is taller than nearly every center he has faced in Asia.
  • Rebounding and shot blocking. 8.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks a game for Al Wahda in his thirties.
  • Durability. Seventeen years between his first and latest FIBA appearances.

What held him back

  • Scoring. In the tournaments we checked, he never averaged more than about 11 points.
  • Exposure. He never played in a league that NBA scouts watch closely.
  • Age now. His role with Syria has shrunk to a few minutes a game.

Is He Really the Syrian Mutombo?

Our video uses that nickname and quotes a line of 15 points and 13.7 rebounds. We tried to confirm both and could not.

  • We found no published source that calls him the Syrian Mutombo. It is a fair description of his role, but treat it as ours, not as an established nickname.
  • We found no competition where he averaged 13.7 rebounds. In one statistics table 13.7 appears as his minutes per game, which may be where the figure came from.

His verified numbers are solid, not spectacular: around 10 points and 8 rebounds at his best.

Was the NBA Ever Realistic?

No, and the reasons are mostly about circumstance. A 7’3″ teenager who plays at a U19 World Championship normally gets offers from European clubs or American colleges. Alhamwi stayed in the Syrian league, and his prime years, from 21 to 30, ran through the 2010s. He went undrafted in 2012, and we found no record of an NBA workout or a contract abroad.

That is what makes his case interesting for this site. He is a reminder that height gets a player noticed, and that a pathway is what turns notice into a career.

Where He Is Now

Alhamwi is still part of the Syria squad in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, in a reduced role. We could not confirm which club he is with for 2026-27. If that changes, this page will be updated.

Why Abdulwahab Alhamwi is not in our database

The database lists 7-footers born in 2001 or later, because it is built to track prospects. Alhamwi was born in 1990. It does list nearly 400 younger players at 7’0″ and above from 61 countries, sorted tallest first.
