The Strongest Player in NBA History: The Untold Story of Jim Rowinski
When basketball fans talk about the 1989 “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons, they talk about Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Rick Mahorn and Isiah Thomas. For a few weeks that season, the team also had a player who may have been the strongest man ever to wear an NBA uniform: Jim Rowinski.
Rowinski was 6’8″ and 260 pounds with a reported 6% body fat. He looked less like a center than like Arnold Schwarzenegger in a basketball uniform. He bench-pressed 420 pounds, and fans cheered whenever he got up to check into a game.
From Walk-On to Purdue Hero
His route to the pros was an unusual one. At Purdue, under head coach Gene Keady, he spent his first years as a reserve.
By his senior year (the 1983–84 season) he was a different player:
-
Production: 15 points and 6.7 rebounds a game on better than 50% shooting.
-
Winning: Purdue went 22–7 and shared the Big Ten title.
-
Honors: Big Ten Most Valuable Player (the Chicago Tribune Silver Basketball) and First-Team All-Big Ten.
His best-known college moment was a buzzer-beater against Illinois. He caught the inbound pass and hit the shot at the horn for a 56–54 win.

Joining the Bad Boys Pistons & The NBA Circuit
Rowinski reached the NBA in March 1989, when the Detroit Pistons signed him to a 10-day contract after John Salley was injured. He had been averaging more than 21 points a game in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), but it was his build that people in Detroit noticed first.
On the broadcasts, announcers compared his upper body to that of the baseball slugger Lance Parrish and passed along how impressed Pistons general manager Jack McCloskey was with his strength and his shooting touch.
After Detroit, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat.

A Powerhouse with a Soft Touch
The muscles got the attention, but he could play:
-
Free throws: For a man his size he had a soft touch, making 84.4% of his free throws in the NBA.
-
Rebounding: In Miami he averaged 2.1 rebounds in only 8 minutes a game, a rate that would have looked good over a starter’s minutes.
His NBA career lasted only 23 games. His professional career lasted much longer: he was a two-time All-CBA First Team selection and played in Italy, Spain, Belgium and Turkey.
