Giants outside the big five

The tallest player in the country is not in a power conference. Olivier Rioux, at 7’9″, plays for UC Irvine in the Big West. Mathok Majok of Charleston Southern (Big South) is listed at 7’4″, and Assane Mbaye of Florida A&M (SWAC) and Maxim Klitschko of East Carolina (American) are both 7’3″. In total, 114 of the 212 Division I 7-footers play outside the Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Big East.

How to read these numbers

Three cautions. Listed heights are generous and are rarely re-measured. Our database only includes players born in 2001 or later, so an older graduate student may be missing. And a roster spot is not a role: many of these players will redshirt or play a few minutes a game. For the ones with NBA potential, see our 2027 NBA draft center rankings and the full list of the tallest players in college basketball.
